PREPARING FOR YOUR FAMILY PHOTO SHOOT.

~ Be playful!

The younger the kids the more playful the photo shoots should be. If I have a specific composition in mind, then I usually ask a parent to stand or sit in a specific place, and then interact with the child, whether it be tickling, whispering, kissing, hugging (we get some lovely natural interaction shots). There is no point forcing them to look at the camera if they don’t want to. It will only cause extra frustration.

~ I like to take family photos by giving family something to do. For example it could be walk, or a tickle-fight, or a piggy back ride. This helps me to capture family memories in a semi-documentary style (I am saying semi-documentary because I will be interacting with the family and asking to stand or sit in specific places or do something specific, but also I let the family be themselves and capture their natural interactions). These type of photos result in unforgettable memories of family having a good time together and also getting natural family photos!

~ Don’t fuss. Let the kids explore and go explore with them! It makes very cute and natural photos  Let’s face it, the kids are typically running the show. We want to see happy faces for pictures and the best way I have found to achieve that is to just let them be kids! If they want to explore the surroundings, no problem. I want them to be themselves and capture that. Typically once I have allowed them to do their thing, it is much easier for them to be coaxed into sitting or standing with Mommy and Daddy for a nice portrait. Maybe you have to bring out the ‘tickle monster’ fingers to get a smile out of them at first, but this is how it is done!

~ Outfits. It’s nice for the family to coordinate the outfits. Whether it be a similar colour palette, or style.

It’s best to avoid clothing with big logos, texts and crazy patterns. The best outfits are comfortable (not too formal), reflect the season and the personality of your family.
